Shopify vs WooCommerce: An Honest Comparison From a Team That Builds Both

Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison from MH Tech Solutions

Shopify is the better choice for most brands that want to sell online with as little upkeep as possible. WooCommerce is the better choice when you need full control: unusual products, a very large catalogue, custom pricing or features, or a store that sits inside a content rich WordPress site. Both can run a profitable store. The right one depends on how much of the running you want to own.

We build and grow stores on both platforms, from Shopify gifting and perfume brands to WooCommerce stores with more than 600 products. This is what we have learned about where each one fits.

How are Shopify and WooCommerce different?

Shopify is a hosted platform. You pay a monthly plan and Shopify looks after hosting, security, updates and checkout. You customise the store with a theme and apps from the Shopify App Store.

WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress. You choose your own hosting and own every file. You extend it with plugins and custom code, and you or your developer keep everything updated and secure.

Area Shopify WooCommerce
Setup Quick, everything in one place Needs hosting, WordPress and setup
Upkeep Handled by Shopify Updates, backups and security are yours
Checkout Fast and trusted, limited changes outside Shopify Plus Fully customisable
Fees Monthly plan, app subscriptions, extra fee without Shopify Payments Hosting, paid extensions, payment provider fees only
Custom features Possible within Shopify’s rules Almost anything can be built
Content and SEO Good, with fixed address formats Full control through WordPress

When should you choose Shopify?

  • You want to launch quickly and keep the store running without a developer on call.
  • Your products are fairly standard: sizes, colours and simple bundles.
  • You plan to sell on Google Shopping, Instagram, TikTok Shop or marketplaces as well.
  • You care about a fast, familiar checkout, including Shop Pay.

Most new brands we work with start on Shopify for these reasons. Aurovex, an Australian Shopify brand, saw a 65% higher conversion rate and 140% more monthly revenue after conversion and automation work on its store. Our Shopify development page covers how we build stores like this.

When should you choose WooCommerce?

  • You have a large or complicated catalogue, such as parts, vehicles or wholesale price lists.
  • You need custom rules: trade pricing, quotes, deposits, competitions or bookings.
  • Your store is part of a bigger website with a lot of content.
  • You want to own the whole system and avoid monthly app subscriptions.
  • You sell in a market where Shopify’s payment options or fees do not suit you.

Some examples from our own work: Save Palestine runs more than 600 products in Norwegian on WooCommerce. PrizePals needed instant wins, live draws and spending limits, which we built as a custom competition engine on WooCommerce. Plexus Motors, a UK car importer, grew online revenue by 70% on its WooCommerce store. None of those would sit comfortably on Shopify.

Which is better for SEO?

Both rank well when built properly. WooCommerce inherits WordPress’s flexibility: you control every address, can build any page structure, and can publish guides and buying advice in the same site. Shopify handles the technical basics well, but uses fixed formats such as /products/ and /collections/, can show one product at several addresses, and often slows down as apps are added.

In practice, the biggest SEO wins on either platform are the same: useful collection or category pages, product descriptions written for buyers rather than copied from the supplier, fast pages on a phone and clean redirects when anything moves. Our Shopify SEO service covers the Shopify side, and our WooCommerce development work includes SEO from launch.

Which is faster?

Shopify’s hosting is fast out of the box, so a lean Shopify store is quick without much effort. A WooCommerce store’s speed depends on its hosting, theme and plugins. Built on a custom theme with good hosting and caching, WooCommerce can be just as fast. Built on a page builder with 40 plugins, it will be slow.

The most common speed problem we fix on Shopify is apps. On WooCommerce, it is page builders, cheap hosting and plugins that load on every page.

Which costs more to run?

Shopify is predictable: a monthly plan, plus app subscriptions, plus payment fees. Apps are where costs quietly grow, which is why we build features such as bundles, size guides and gift options into the theme instead.

WooCommerce has no platform fee, but good hosting, premium extensions and regular maintenance all cost money. A small, simple store is often cheaper on Shopify once your own time is counted. A large or complex store is often cheaper on WooCommerce over a few years.

Can you move from WooCommerce to Shopify, or back?

Yes, in both directions. Products, customers and order history can be moved. The part that matters most for your traffic is redirecting every old product and category address to its new one, so the rankings you have earned carry across. We also check structured data, analytics and tracking before and after the switch.

Moves are worth it when the platform is holding the business back, for example a WooCommerce store whose owner no longer wants to manage hosting, or a Shopify store paying for a dozen apps to do what custom code could do once. It is rarely worth moving just because the other platform is fashionable.

Frequently asked questions

Is WooCommerce really free?

The plugin is free. Hosting, a domain, a security certificate, premium extensions and maintenance are not. Budget for those before comparing it with a Shopify plan.

Is Shopify better for beginners?

Usually, yes. Adding products, taking orders and setting up discounts is simpler, and there is no server to worry about.

Can WooCommerce handle thousands of products?

Yes, with good hosting and a well built theme. Stores with thousands of products run on WooCommerce, but they need more care than a small store.

Which is better for selling in Australia, the UK or the US?

Both work well in all three. Shopify Payments is available in each of them. WooCommerce works with Stripe, PayPal and most local payment providers.
